The Michigan Wheat Program board has partnered on important perks for wheat farmers and offers Michigan growers children the opportunity to apply for a scholarship through NAWG.
First, in the spring of 2013 the board announced an innovative partnership with the MSU Diagnostic Services to help farmers identify problems with their wheat at no charge. Read more about it and download required forms at the Wheat Diagnostics tab.
The second program, begun in 2012, provides modest financial support to farmers who achieve verification through the Michigan Ag Environmental Assurance Program. While the MAEAP process is free, it can be time-consuming. As a result, the board agreed to offer a one-time $50 award for documented wheat farmers (one award per farmer, not per farm) for those obtaining their first verification after June 1, 2013. The Jerry Minore Scholarship, honoring students pursuing a career in agriculture is available to college students associated with the wheat industry. The Michigan Wheat Program is a member of NAWG and has negotiated that for all growers, so that they are members, too. The scholarship is meant to support students’ efforts who have a passion for agriculture in their studies. Click here for more information.
The Michigan Wheat Program is a state-check off program voted in by the state’s wheat farmers to assess each bushel of wheat grown and sold. The funds from the program are utilized to further the wheat industry in the state benefitting the state’s nearly 8,000 wheat farmers who grow about 450,000 acres of wheat annually producing about a 40 million bushel crop.
